How To Dye Your Chucks

Step 1: Prep Your Shoes*

1. Pre-wash in warm, soapy water to improve dye absorption.
2. Remove and set aside shoe insoles and laces.
3. Cover the soles with electrical tape to protect them from getting dyed.

*See kit for full instructions.

Step 2: Prep Your Space

1. Cover work area with plastic to protect against spills.
2. Fill a plastic container or stainless steel sink with three gallons of hot water (ideally 140ºF).
3. Add 1 tsp of dish detergent to help promote level dyeing.
4. Wearing rubber gloves, add Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye to the dyebath. Double the quantity for a deeper color. Mix well.

Step 3: Drop Them In

1. Dip a paper towel into the dyebath to test color. If color is too light, add more dye. If color is too dark, add more water.
2. Wet the shoes first and then dip them sole-side-up into the dyebath.
3. When desired color is achieved, remove from dyebath. Fabric will lighten as it dries.

Step 4: Wash & Dry

1. To enhance the color and reduce color bleeding, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative** immediately after dyeing and before washing, following these instructions.
2. Rinse in cool water until water begins to run clear.
3. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.

**Sold separately. This is not included in the kit.
